چکیده

Discovering temporal patterns in large datasets is a challenging problem because researchers must explore a huge space of possible correlations. EventScope is a visualization and ranking tool to assist in identification of temporal patterns leading to, or following, different events. In order to identify non-trivial patterns, EventScope splits the data based on user-specified reference events. Patterns are sorted based on differences found between these two groups. By providing information regarding an event of interest relative to two outcomes, more useful temporal patterns can be identified. EventScope was evaluated by conducting usability tests with events derived from one season of Chicago Bulls basketball games. Usability test results from non-expert users were generally positive and users were able to successfully identify several strong relations.

A Goal Programming Method for Finding Common Weights in DEA with an Improved Discriminating Power for Efficiency

A characteristic of data envelopment analysis (DEA) is to allow individual decision making units (DMUs) to select the most advantageous weights in calculating their efficiency scores. This flexibility, on the other hand, deters the comparison among DMUs on a common base. For dealing with this difficulty and assessing all the DMUs on the same scale, this paper proposes using a multiple objective...

The EventScope Remote Science Operations Tool: Using a Visualization of a Remote Location as an Interface for Robotic Exploration

Using visualizations based on orbital data and imagery, the EventScope Remote Science Operations Tool allows scientists to explore a remote location and control a rover in that location. Scientists create a rover plan by sticking virtual pins in the visualization. This paradigm for exploration is being developed in conjunction with the Life in the Atacama Project at Carnegie Mellon University. CR

TESTING FOR “RANDOMNESS” IN SPATIAL POINT PATTERNS, USING TEST STATISTICS BASED ON ONE-DIMENSIONAL INTER-EVENT DISTANCES

To test for “randomness” in spatial point patterns, we propose two test statistics that are obtained by “reducing” two-dimensional point patterns to the one-dimensional one. Also the exact and asymptotic distribution of these statistics are drawn.

EventScope: A Telescience Interface for Internet-Based Education

The goal of exploration through telerobotics is to broaden our understanding of the universe. Towards this goal, the EventScope project at Carnegie Mellon University merges educational software and a telescience / telerobotics mission interface for use within classroom settings to provide more direct connections to new information. Answering scientific questions requires mission interaction on ...
